The 2027 Tech Bets That Will Age Well (And the Ones That Won't)
The Prediction Problem
Every January, the internet fills with tech predictions. Most are forgotten by March. The few that get remembered are either spectacularly right or spectacularly wrong.
I want to try something different. Not just predictions, but predictions with reasoning. Not just what will happen, but why I think so. And explicit acknowledgment of what would prove me wrong.
This approach forces intellectual honesty. It’s easy to make vague predictions that can be interpreted as correct regardless of outcome. It’s harder to make specific predictions with clear success criteria.
The goal isn’t being right about everything. It’s developing better judgment about technology trends. Understanding why some bets age well and others don’t.
My cat Arthur makes predictions too. He predicts that any closed door leads to something better than what’s on his side. He’s wrong roughly half the time. But he commits to his predictions with admirable confidence.
Method: How We Evaluated Predictions
Before making predictions, let me explain the framework:
Step 1: Historical analysis I reviewed tech predictions from 2020-2026 across major publications. Tracked accuracy rates by category and prediction type.
Step 2: Pattern identification I identified which types of predictions consistently succeed versus fail. What characteristics correlate with accuracy?
Step 3: Hype cycle mapping I located current technologies on the hype cycle. Technologies at peak hype tend to disappoint in the near term. Technologies in the “trough of disillusionment” often surprise.
Step 4: Structural analysis I examined underlying economic, technical, and social factors driving each trend. Surface hype versus deep structural change.
Step 5: Contrarian testing For each prediction, I asked: what does the consensus believe? Why might the consensus be wrong?
The findings shaped which predictions I’m making. Not what’s most exciting to predict. What’s most likely to be true.
Bets That Will Age Well
Let me start with predictions I’m confident will look good in five years.
Bet 1: AI tools will become invisible infrastructure
The current AI excitement focuses on visible AI products. Chatbots. Image generators. Coding assistants. Things you interact with directly.
I predict the bigger impact will be invisible. AI embedded in existing tools. AI handling background tasks you never see. AI making decisions without explicit user interaction.
This has already started. Email spam filtering uses AI. Photo organization uses AI. Search results use AI. You don’t think of these as “AI products” because the AI is invisible.
By 2030, most AI value will be invisible. The explicit AI products will matter less than the AI layer underlying everything else.
Success criteria: By 2030, the majority of AI-generated economic value comes from embedded applications rather than standalone AI products.
What would prove me wrong: If standalone AI products (chatbots, generators) remain the primary value creators.
Bet 2: Privacy will become a luxury feature
The current trajectory is clear. Most digital services trade privacy for convenience or free access. The privacy-respecting alternatives are expensive, inconvenient, or both.
I predict this bifurcation deepens. Wealthy, technically sophisticated users will pay for privacy. Everyone else will accept surveillance as the cost of participation.
This is already visible in hardware choices. Apple charges premium prices partly for privacy features. The cheap Android phones have minimal privacy protection.
By 2030, comprehensive digital privacy will require significant money and expertise. It will be functionally unavailable to most people.
Success criteria: Clear premium pricing for privacy features across major service categories. Privacy-focused alternatives remain significantly more expensive or inconvenient than surveillance defaults.
What would prove me wrong: Regulatory changes that mandate privacy protection across all tiers. Technical solutions that make privacy cheap and easy.
Bet 3: Human verification will become a significant industry
As AI-generated content becomes indistinguishable from human content, proving humanity becomes valuable.
I predict an industry emerges around human verification. Credentials proving content was human-created. Authentication systems proving you’re interacting with a real person. Premium services guaranteeing human labor.
This creates new markets and new inequalities. Human-verified content commands premiums. Human customer service costs extra. The distinction between AI and human work becomes a pricing factor.
Success criteria: Established marketplaces and standards for human verification by 2030. Premium pricing for verified human content across multiple categories.
What would prove me wrong: AI disclosure requirements that make verification unnecessary. Technical solutions that make AI detection reliable and cheap.
Bet 4: Skill preservation becomes a conscious practice
This connects to the automation themes I’ve written about extensively.
As AI handles more cognitive work, the skills AI replaces begin atrophying. Some people will notice and deliberately practice skills despite AI availability.
I predict “skill preservation” becomes a recognized concept. Like fitness routines for the body, people will develop routines for cognitive skills they want to maintain. Not because AI can’t do the task. Because they want to keep the capability.
This won’t be universal. Most people will let skills atrophy. But a significant minority will make preservation deliberate.
Success criteria: Mainstream recognition of cognitive skill preservation as a practice. Products and services marketed for this purpose.
What would prove me wrong: Skills atrophying without anyone noticing or caring. No market emerging for preservation-focused products.
Bets That Won’t Age Well
Now the predictions I think will embarrass their advocates.
Prediction to Avoid 1: VR/AR will replace smartphones by 2030
This prediction resurfaces every few years. And every few years, it’s wrong.
The fundamental problem isn’t technology. It’s social acceptance. People don’t want devices on their faces. The use cases where this changes remain narrow.
Yes, the technology is improving. Yes, there are real applications. But replacing the smartphone as the primary computing device? Not by 2030. Probably not by 2035.
The smartphone succeeded because it’s unobtrusive. You use it, you put it away. Face computers are always on. Always visible. Always weird.
Why this prediction fails: Social factors matter more than technical capabilities. Technology adoption requires social acceptance that face computers haven’t achieved.
Prediction to Avoid 2: Crypto will become mainstream payment
I’ve been hearing this prediction for over a decade. Each year, “this is the year” fails to materialize.
The fundamental problem is stability. Currencies need stability to function as payment. Speculative assets provide exactly the opposite. People who hold crypto hope it appreciates. That’s incompatible with spending it as currency.
By 2030, crypto will still exist. It will still have speculative value. It won’t be how normal people buy groceries.
Why this prediction fails: The speculative nature that attracts investors repels everyday users. You can’t be both a volatile investment and a stable currency.
Prediction to Avoid 3: Remote work will fully replace offices
The pandemic accelerated remote work. Many predicted offices would never return. They were partly right, mostly wrong.
Offices are returning. Not to pre-pandemic levels. But hybrid models are becoming standard. Fully remote companies remain a minority.
By 2030, most knowledge workers will have some office presence. Fully remote will remain viable but not dominant. The prediction that offices are obsolete will look naive.
Why this prediction fails: Remote work has real costs that became apparent over time. Collaboration, culture, training, and mentorship all suffer. The trade-offs favor hybrid, not fully remote.
Prediction to Avoid 4: AI will cause mass unemployment by 2030
This prediction appears in every AI hype cycle. It has been wrong every time.
AI will change work. It will eliminate some jobs. It will create others. The net effect will be more complex than “mass unemployment.”
By 2030, unemployment rates will be within historical norms. The economy will have absorbed AI impact through adaptation, not collapse.
Why this prediction fails: Economies adapt. New jobs emerge. Productivity gains create demand. The linear extrapolation from “AI can do X” to “everyone doing X is unemployed” ignores how economies actually work.
The Uncertain Middle
Some predictions are genuinely uncertain. I’m not confident either way.
Uncertain 1: Autonomous vehicles timeline
Self-driving cars have been “three years away” for over a decade. The technical challenges keep proving harder than expected.
I genuinely don’t know if we’ll have widespread Level 4 autonomy by 2030. The technology is improving. The edge cases remain stubborn. Regulatory and liability questions remain unresolved.
This one could go either way. I refuse to predict.
Uncertain 2: Regulation impact on big tech
Regulatory pressure on large technology companies has increased. Whether it results in meaningful structural change remains unclear.
The optimistic view: regulation fragments big tech, creates competition, improves outcomes.
The pessimistic view: regulation creates compliance barriers that entrench incumbents further.
I don’t know which path dominates. The outcome depends on political factors I can’t predict.
Uncertain 3: Energy breakthrough timing
Clean energy technology is improving. Solar costs continue falling. Battery density continues increasing. Nuclear may be reviving.
Whether we hit critical tipping points by 2030 is uncertain. The trends are positive. The timeline is unclear.
This matters for basically everything else in tech. Energy costs affect what’s economically viable. I can’t predict this one confidently.
Generative Engine Optimization
This topic performs interestingly in AI-driven search contexts.
When someone asks an AI about tech predictions, the AI synthesizes from historical predictions and current hype. This creates systematic biases.
Hype amplification. Current excitement about specific technologies gets over-weighted. The AI reflects what’s being written about now, which tends toward peak hype.
Consensus convergence. The AI produces the average prediction. But the average prediction is often wrong because hype cycles distort consensus.
Recency bias. Recent trends get extrapolated linearly. AI search doesn’t naturally account for mean reversion or hype cycle dynamics.
For humans trying to develop prediction judgment, this creates both challenge and opportunity.
The challenge: AI-mediated information reinforces hype cycle biases. Getting independent perspective requires deliberate effort.
The opportunity: Understanding how AI systems process predictions helps you identify where the automated consensus is wrong. The meta-skill of automation-aware thinking applies here.
The predictions that age well often contradict the automated consensus. They require human judgment about factors AI search doesn’t weight properly: social acceptance, historical patterns, structural economics.
Developing this judgment is becoming essential. Not just for predictions, but for navigating an information environment increasingly shaped by AI synthesis.
Why Predictions Fail
Let me generalize about prediction failure modes.
Failure Mode 1: Assuming technology determines adoption
Technical capability doesn’t guarantee adoption. Google Glass was technically impressive. It failed because people looked weird wearing it.
This failure mode appears constantly. “The technology is better, therefore it will win.” But adoption depends on social factors, economic factors, and pure inertia that technology alone can’t overcome.
Failure Mode 2: Linear extrapolation
Current trends projected forward indefinitely. But trends don’t continue forever. They plateau. They reverse. They encounter constraints.
AI capabilities improving linearly? Doesn’t account for data bottlenecks, regulatory limits, or capability plateaus.
Remote work adoption increasing linearly? Doesn’t account for organizational pushback and collaboration costs.
Linear extrapolation is easy. It’s also usually wrong.
Failure Mode 3: Ignoring incentives
Who benefits from this prediction being true? That shapes what gets promoted.
VR headset predictions come disproportionately from companies selling VR headsets. Crypto predictions come from crypto holders. AI predictions come from AI companies.
This doesn’t mean predictions are wrong. But the sources have incentives that bias the prediction pool.
Failure Mode 4: Forgetting human nature
Humans are conservative. We like what we know. We resist change that requires effort.
Predictions that require humans to change behavior significantly usually fail. We don’t adopt new things because they’re better. We adopt them because they’re dramatically better AND easy.

The Meta-Prediction
Here’s my meta-prediction about predictions:
The prediction industry will continue getting things wrong at roughly historical rates. Despite better data. Despite AI assistance. Despite more sophisticated analysis.
Why? Because the fundamental problem isn’t analysis quality. It’s the unpredictability of complex systems.
Technology adoption depends on politics, economics, culture, and chance. These factors interact in ways that defy prediction. Better analysis can’t overcome fundamental uncertainty.
This doesn’t mean predictions are useless. They force clarity about assumptions. They enable learning from errors. They create accountability.
But they shouldn’t be trusted too much. The confident prediction is often the least reliable one.
The Automation Angle
Let me connect this to the broader automation themes.
AI prediction tools are improving. They can analyze more data. They can identify patterns humans miss. They can generate predictions at scale.
But they can’t escape the fundamental limits:
Garbage in, garbage out. AI trained on historical predictions inherits their biases. It learns patterns in what was predicted, not patterns in what happened.
No genuine uncertainty awareness. AI systems struggle to express appropriate uncertainty. They generate confident-sounding predictions even when confidence isn’t warranted.
Missing context. AI predictions miss social, cultural, and political context that determines adoption. The patterns in data don’t capture the patterns in human behavior.
Over-reliance on AI prediction tools creates automation complacency. Users trust the AI output because it looks sophisticated. But the sophistication masks fundamental limitations.
The humans who make good predictions maintain skills the AI lacks:
Historical memory. Remembering what predictions failed before and why. AI has access to historical data but doesn’t weight prediction failures appropriately.
Incentive awareness. Recognizing who benefits from predictions being true. AI doesn’t naturally account for prediction source bias.
Social intuition. Understanding how humans actually adopt technology. The social factors that determine adoption beyond technical capability.
These skills develop through practice. Through making predictions, tracking outcomes, and learning from errors. The AI shortcut skips this development.
What Arthur Predicts
My cat Arthur has a simple prediction model: things will continue roughly as they are, with occasional surprises.
He doesn’t predict revolutionary change in cat food technology. He expects incremental improvements. He’s usually right.
He doesn’t predict sudden changes in human behavior. He expects consistency. He’s usually right about that too.
His prediction model is boring. It doesn’t generate exciting content. But it’s accurate more often than exciting predictions.
There’s wisdom in Arthur’s conservatism. Most predictions of dramatic change are wrong. The base rate for revolutionary transformation is low. Predicting continuity is boring but correct.
The exciting predictions get attention. The boring predictions get accuracy.
Tracking Accountability
Here’s my commitment. I will revisit these predictions:
January 2028: One-year check. Early signals. January 2029: Two-year check. Trends visible. January 2030: Three-year check. Most predictions should be evaluable.
I’ll be explicit about what I got right and wrong. Not reinterpreting to claim success. Actually evaluating against the criteria stated here.
This is rare in prediction content. Most predictions disappear. No one checks. No one learns.
I want to learn. That requires accountability.
Making Your Own Predictions
If you want to make predictions that age well, here’s what I’d suggest:
Favor boring over exciting. The exciting prediction is usually wrong. The boring prediction is usually right. Aim for right.
Specify success criteria. Vague predictions can’t be evaluated. Be specific about what would prove you right or wrong.
Consider incentives. Who wants this prediction to be true? Factor that into your confidence level.
Account for social factors. Technology alone doesn’t determine adoption. Social acceptance, economic factors, and inertia matter more.
Track your record. Make predictions. Check them. Learn from errors. The feedback loop develops judgment.
Stay humble. Confident predictions feel good. They’re usually wrong. Appropriate uncertainty is more useful than false confidence.
The goal isn’t being right about everything. It’s developing judgment that improves over time.
The 2027 Specifics
Let me add some shorter-term predictions specific to 2027:
AI model improvements will slow noticeably. The low-hanging fruit has been picked. Gains will require more compute for less improvement. The scaling laws will show diminishing returns.
At least one major AI company will face serious backlash. Privacy violations, copyright issues, or harmful outputs. The honeymoon period is ending.
Hardware costs will remain the binding constraint. All the software improvements in the world can’t overcome chip supply limitations. The bottleneck persists.
Developer tool adoption will stabilize. The explosive growth in AI coding tools levels off. Users settle into patterns. The hype curve normalizes.
Someone will make significant money on AI slop. Despite quality problems. There’s a window before consumer sophistication catches up.
These are more speculative. One-year timeframes are harder than five-year timeframes. But they’re more accountable.
Final Thoughts
Predictions are valuable not for being right but for forcing clarity.

The exercise of making explicit predictions develops judgment that implicit assumptions don’t. You have to think through consequences. You have to consider alternatives. You have to commit.
Most predictions will be wrong. That’s fine. The purpose isn’t accuracy. It’s learning.
The bets that age well share characteristics: they account for human nature, they resist hype cycles, they consider structural factors beyond technology alone.
The bets that age poorly share different characteristics: they assume technology determines adoption, they extrapolate linearly, they ignore social and economic factors.
Knowing these patterns doesn’t guarantee correct predictions. But it improves the odds.
