Our take

Verdict: A do-it-all full-frame hybrid — excellent for photo and video, with a couple of video caveats to know.

The problem. You want one full-frame body that’s equally strong for stills and serious video. Why it matters. A genuine hybrid saves buying separate cameras for each job. What it is. Sony’s A7 IV (body only): a 33MP full-frame sensor, class-leading autofocus, strong 4K video and a deep lens ecosystem.

Pros

  • Outstanding autofocus and subject tracking
  • 33MP balances resolution and low-light well
  • Huge native and third-party lens selection

Cons

  • Rolling shutter and crop in some video modes
  • Can warm up during long 4K recording
  • Body-only — factor in lens costs

Who should buy it

  • Hybrid shooters wanting one capable full-frame body for photo and video

Who should skip it

  • Video-first users needing the cleanest readout, or beginners better served by APS-C

Bottom line. A superb all-rounder — buy the body if you already own glass, and plan lenses if not.
