The End of the Specification Era
Remember when a review looked like an Excel spreadsheet? Processor 2.4 GHz, RAM 8 GB, battery 4000 mAh. Done. Buy it or don’t.
That era is over. And I’m not sure everyone understands why.
Today I read a phone review and the author tells me how the device fell into a toilet at a company party. I read a vacuum cleaner review and learn that the author’s cat was initially terrified of it, but after three weeks she sleeps on it. I read a software review and the author describes how the app saved his marriage because he finally stopped forgetting anniversaries.
It’s funny. It’s human. And paradoxically — it’s far more useful than any specification table ever was.
Why Specifications Stopped Being Enough
Technical parameters are objective. That’s both their strength and their weakness.
Let me give you a number: 120 Hz display refresh rate. What does that tell you? If you’re not a graphic designer or a gamer, probably nothing. Is it better than 60 Hz? Yes. Will you notice the difference in everyday use? Maybe. Is it worth the extra cost? That depends.
And this is where the problem begins. Specifications tell you what a product has, but they don’t tell you what it’s like to live with it. They don’t tell you whether it will feel comfortable in your hand after an hour of scrolling. They don’t tell you whether the volume button placement will irritate you. They don’t tell you whether you’ll regret your choice after a month.
Specifications are like a résumé. You can have a perfect CV and be an insufferable colleague. You can have average education and be someone everyone wants to work with. Products work the same way.
The Honeymoon Period Phenomenon
Every product has its honeymoon. The first week with a new phone is magical. Everything is fast, fresh, exciting. Then reality arrives.
Most traditional reviews are written during this honeymoon period. The reviewer gets the product, spends a week with it, writes an article, sends the product back. They never discover that the battery holds twenty percent less after three months. They never find that small software bug that only appears after the hundredth use of a specific feature.
That’s why I’m interested in reviews after six months. After a year. After two years. Those are rare, but invaluable.
My British lilac cat Chester could tell you about this. When I bought a new office chair, the initial reviews were enthusiastic. Ergonomic, comfortable, beautiful. After a year of use, I know the upholstery isn’t as durable as they promised. Chester likes sleeping on it and his claws have left marks that no specification predicted.
How We Evaluated

Expertise is valuable. But expertise without empathy for the ordinary user is only half the story. The best reviewers are those who can think like an expert and like a novice simultaneously. There aren’t many of those.
The Erosion of Critical Thinking
And now comes the less pleasant part. The shift from specifications to subjective experience has its dark side.
When a review was a table of numbers, you could verify it relatively easily. The processor either has the stated frequency or it doesn’t. The battery either has the stated capacity or it doesn’t. It was objective.
Subjective experience cannot be verified. And this is where the space for manipulation begins.
An influencer tells you the product “changed their life.” You have no way to find out if they mean it seriously, or if they were paid for this statement. You have no way to find out if their lifestyle is even comparable to yours.
Gradually we stop critically evaluating information. We stop asking for evidence. We stop distinguishing between authentic experience and marketing in disguise. This is an erosion that has consequences far beyond the world of product reviews.
The Automation of Reviewing
Today there are tools that can generate a product review in seconds. Just enter the specifications and target audience. The output is grammatically correct, structurally sound, and completely worthless.
Why worthless? Because the most important thing is missing. Real experience. Real time spent with the product. Real frustrations and real surprises.
Automated reviews are like nutritional tables on food packaging. Technically accurate, but they won’t tell you whether you’ll enjoy the meal.
And here’s the danger. The more we rely on automated review summaries, the more we let algorithms select the “best” product for us, the more we lose the ability to judge for ourselves what is actually good for us.
It’s like GPS navigation. After years of use, many people have lost the ability to orient themselves in space without their phone. Not completely — but enough that it becomes a problem when technology fails.
The Paradox of Choice in the Digital Age
Barry Schwartz wrote a famous book about the paradox of choice. The more options we have, the harder it is to choose and the less satisfied we are with our choice.
Reviews were supposed to solve this problem. They were meant to help us navigate an overwhelming selection. Instead, they often make the problem worse.
Today you can read hundreds of reviews of one product. Some enthusiastic, some devastating. Some detailed, some superficial. Some authentic, some paid for. How do you make sense of it?
Paradoxically, the more information we have, the more we need our own judgment. And that’s a skill many people have never systematically developed.
The Return to Intuition
Here’s something no review will tell you: sometimes you just know.
You pick up a product and you feel it’s the one. Or you feel it’s not. This intuition isn’t magic — it’s the sum of all your previous experiences, processed in a way the conscious mind cannot replicate.
The problem is that intuition can only be cultivated through experience. You can’t read it. You can’t download it. You have to live it.
The more we rely on others’ reviews instead of our own experimentation, the fewer opportunities we have to develop intuition. It’s another form of skill erosion that few people realize.

And then there’s the problem of averages. An average rating of 4.2 stars tells you almost nothing. It might mean most people are mildly satisfied. Or it might mean half the people love the product and half hate it. These are fundamentally different situations.
That’s why one-star reviews are often the most useful. Not because I want to know what’s wrong with the product. But because negative reviews usually contain specific, concrete information. “Stopped working after three months.” “Customer support doesn’t respond.” “The color in photographs doesn’t match reality.”
That’s information I can use.
The Long-Term Perspective
Let’s return to what I mentioned at the beginning. Reviews after six months. After a year. That’s what we truly want — but rarely get.
The economics of reviews don’t support it. A new product generates interest and clicks. A yearly review update interests nobody. Algorithmically, it’s a dead topic.
And so we’re trapped in an endless cycle of first impressions. We buy based on honeymoon periods. We regret when it’s too late.
There are exceptions. Some enthusiast communities maintain long-term records of products. Some forums have threads where people report problems discovered after months of use. These sources are gold — but they require effort to find.

How does this topic perform in the world of AI-driven search engines and summarization?
Paradoxically very well — and very poorly at the same time.
AI systems are excellent at aggregation. They can go through thousands of reviews and extract common patterns. “Most users praise battery life but criticize camera quality in low light.” That’s useful.
But AI systems have trouble with context. They cannot assess whether a specific reviewer is similar to you. They cannot distinguish authentic experience from sophisticated marketing. They cannot capture those subtle nuances that make a review truly valuable.
And here’s the key point: in an AI-mediated world, the ability to critically evaluate information becomes a meta-skill. It’s not enough to know how to read reviews. You must know how to read between the lines. You must recognize when AI is giving you useful synthesis and when it’s giving you well-formatted worthlessness.

Reviews as Relationship, Not Transaction
Perhaps the best way to think about modern reviews is to see them as a relationship, not a transaction.
Transactional approach: I need information. I read a review. I get information. Done.
Relationship approach: I find a reviewer whose values and usage patterns are similar to mine. I follow them long-term. I learn how to interpret their opinions. I build a mental model of how to translate their experiences into my own.
It’s more work. But the results are incomparably better.
Practical Tips for Reading Reviews
Since we’re at it, here are a few concrete tips I’ve picked up over the years:
1. Look for specifics “The product is great” is worthless. “The product saved me two hours a week processing invoices” is useful.
2. Read negative reviews first Not to be pessimistic. But because negative reviews are usually more specific.
3. Look for mentions of time “After three months of use…” is a signal that the reviewer actually lived with the product.
4. Ignore extremes Both enthusiastic five-star reviews and crushing one-star reviews are often emotional reactions, not thoughtful evaluations.
5. Ask: Is this person like me? A review from a professional photographer has limited value for an amateur. And vice versa.
The Future of Reviews
Where will reviews evolve from here?
I see several trends. Personalization — reviews filtered according to your profile and previous preferences. Long-term tracking — platforms that remind you to write an update after six months. Verification — systems that verify the reviewer actually bought and used the product.
But no technology will solve the fundamental problem. In the end, you must decide for yourself what’s important to you. No algorithm will do that for you. No AI will tell you whether a product will fit you.
That’s a skill. And like any skill, it requires practice.
