When you execute an Ansible playbook that “configures a web server,” what actually happens? Packages get installed through specific package managers. Configuration files get written to specific locations. Services get enabled through systemd or other init systems. Permissions get set on various resources. Firewall rules get configured. Each of these involves specific commands with specific options performing specific system operations.

Modern automation culture encourages finding existing scripts, playbooks, and configurations to copy rather than understanding and writing from scratch.

Need to configure something? Search GitHub, copy a relevant playbook, maybe customize variables, run it. This is efficient. It’s also preventing learning.

When you copy automation without understanding it, you don’t learn:

  • What system operations are actually being performed

This is partially true but misleading. Code documents operations being performed. It doesn’t document why those operations are appropriate, what alternatives were considered, what trade-offs were made, or what assumptions are embedded.

Reading Terraform code, you can see that it creates specific AWS resources with specific configurations. You can’t see why those resources, why those configurations, why those security group rules, why that network topology. The code is mechanical documentation without strategic explanation.

Understanding requires more than reading code. It requires knowing:

  • Why this approach versus alternatives
  • What problems this solves

When AI analyzes requirements and generates Terraform, writes Ansible playbooks, suggests system configurations based on best practices, you’re not administering systems anymore. You’re reviewing AI-generated automation and hoping it’s correct.

This is abstraction one level beyond automation frameworks. Frameworks require you to write automation that performs system operations. AI writes the automation itself based on high-level requirements. You’re even more removed from actual systems.

In an AI-mediated infrastructure world, the critical skill is evaluating whether AI-generated configurations are appropriate, secure, and maintainable. This requires deep systems knowledge—exactly the knowledge that automation dependency prevents from developing.

If you never learned to work with systems directly because automation handled everything, you lack foundation to evaluate whether AI suggestions are sound. The Recovery Path for Engineers

If automation dependency describes your current approach, recovery is possible through deliberate practice:
