Lithium has a certain atomic weight, a certain electronegativity, a certain behavior when it forms compounds. You can’t negotiate with lithium. You can’t convince it to hold more electrons than physics allows.
This is why battery breakthroughs are so difficult to achieve. Every few months, some lab announces a revolutionary new battery chemistry. Lithium-sulfur! Solid-state! Sodium-ion! The press releases promise 10x improvements. The timelines promise commercial availability in “3-5 years.”

The lithium-ion battery was first demonstrated in the 1970s. It didn’t reach commercial products until the 1990s. It didn’t become dominant until the 2010s.
The Skills We’re Not Developing

The battery domain is a perfect example because the gap between hype and reality is so large. If you develop good calibration here, you can apply it elsewhere. You learn to ask: What are the fundamental constraints? What would need to be true for this claim to be valid? What’s the track record of similar claims?
This automation-aware thinking doesn’t require expertise in chemistry or physics. It requires a habit of skepticism and a framework for evaluation. It requires remembering that physics doesn’t care about press releases, and that “could” is not the same as “will.”
The Demand Side of the Equation
Most discussion of the battery problem focuses on supply: how do we make better batteries? But there’s another approach: how do we reduce demand for battery capacity?
This is where engineering cleverness comes in. If you can’t increase supply, reduce demand.

Some investors have learned this lesson. They now focus on manufacturing innovation rather than chemistry breakthroughs. Building a better battery factory is achievable. Building a better battery chemistry is unpredictable.
What Actually Might Help
If revolutionary chemistry breakthroughs are unlikely, what might actually improve the battery situation?
System-level integration. Rather than improving batteries in isolation, improve how they’re integrated into products. Tesla’s approach of designing the vehicle around the battery pack, rather than fitting batteries into an existing design, shows how this works.
Second-life applications. EV batteries that no longer meet automotive standards still have 70-80% of their capacity. They can power buildings, store grid energy, or serve other less demanding applications. This extends the value of existing batteries without requiring new chemistry.
Alternative storage. For grid applications, batteries aren’t the only option. Pumped hydro, compressed air, thermal storage, and hydrogen all offer alternatives with different trade-offs. No single technology is optimal for all applications.
Demand management. Smart grids that shift demand to match supply reduce the need for storage. If you can charge your car when solar is abundant and avoid charging when it’s scarce, you need less grid storage.
Nuclear and geothermal. Baseload power that doesn’t depend on weather reduces the storage requirement. This is increasingly recognized even by former opponents of nuclear energy.
None of these is a silver bullet. All require significant investment and face their own challenges. But together, they represent a path forward that doesn’t depend on battery miracles.
The Longer View
Zoom out far enough, and the current battery limitation looks like a temporary problem. Not temporary in the sense of “solved next year,” but temporary in the sense of “solved eventually.”
Human civilization has faced similar resource constraints before. The wood shortage of the 18th century drove the development of coal power. Oil scarcity concerns in the 20th century drove efficiency improvements and alternative exploration. Each constraint was eventually overcome, though the timeline was decades, not years.
Battery technology will likely follow the same pattern. Some combination of better chemistry, better manufacturing, and better alternatives will eventually remove the current constraints. But “eventually” might mean 2050 or 2070, not 2028.
