How do you evaluate your own skills? Fan thinking: assume you’re good at things you enjoy. Scientific thinking: seek honest feedback, test yourself against objective standards, notice gaps between self-perception and performance.

The fan mindset is comfortable. It protects ego. It maintains consistency. It avoids the discomfort of being wrong.

The scientific mindset is uncomfortable. It requires admitting errors. It demands updating beliefs. It accepts that past you was sometimes wrong.

But the scientific mindset produces better outcomes. Better decisions. Better understanding. Better calibration between belief and reality.

Luna’s Assessment

Luna evaluated her scratching post scientifically, though she’d deny calling it that.

First, she ignored it completely. No purchase justification—it was a gift. No emotional investment in its success.
